  • Run the “Paint Setup Wizard” to Auto-UV map the object and create a texture map.
  • (since the object was not UV mapped in Blacksmith3D-Paint, there is not need to re-export the OBJ file)
  • Export the texture from Blacksmith3D-Paint-Freeware and apply it to the model in Max.
  • If using existing UV mapping, then create a map and apply it to the textures (you can drag and drop a map from the “Maps” tab directly onto the object, or use the “Materials” section in the manager.

Import the OBJ file to Blacksmith3D-Paint-Freeware.Since there is currently no Max->Blacksmith3D-Paint->Max tutorials yet (that's the whole point of this thread), so here are two basic workflows.

on how to make this process as simple and "issue free" as possible. I'll be getting my hands dirty with Max 9 this week, but I'd really your opinions, observations, etc. These are just two issues that I can think of right now, but I'm sure there are others that should be considered.

Now, given the way Blacksmith3D-Paint was designed to paint across seams so they are virtually undetectable, this sort of “post-blurring” will definitely take away from that. I do recall, while I was using a previous version of 3DS Max (3.1, way old!) that the default behavior when applying a texture map to a model was that a “blur texture” option was set. Second, will be the treatment of texture maps. As we discussed in a previous thread, the first issue to be dealt with is MAX's OBJ exporter/importer to see if there are any issues there. So with that being said, I'll open the discussion. I am absolutely committed to making this process fast and simple, taking care of as many of the "special cases" as possible, so you - The Artist -, can simply paint textures on your models without having to tweak 100 parameters before you can begin. Initially, I'll use this information to make a few comprehensive tutorials illustrating different workflows, and if necessary, I'll write a script or plug-in to make the transition easier.

However, as you all are painfully aware, there are always “issues” when interchanging data between 3D applications.īefore I start actively marketing this software towards the 3D Studio MAX community, I would like to investigate the workflow issues as thoroughly as possible. The software was designed to be very generic, so it can be used with just about any 3D application that can import/export OBJ file, and uses standard UV mapping. The software is a true 3D paint application that allows you to paint directly on 3D objects, and special attention has been put towards allowing you to paint across UV seams with little or no consideration. I just released a new version of Blacksmith3D-Suite 3.1, which include Blacksmith3D-Paint and Blacksmith3D-Paint-Freeware.
